Sugar Loaf Launches debut album “Nulla-Boa”
Having recorded a bunch of tracks back in 2023, in a dank practice studio in Brunswick, Melbourne, the pair are finally ready to unleash their debut album “Nulla-boa”. Come and see a very special, one-night-only performance on Sunday July 13, 2025 at Lyrics Underground, Maylands (Perth) where Maximillian, Asha and some very fine guests will play a selection of their favourite Brazilian tunes.
“Nulla-Boa” is a made up word inspired by the stretch of land that divides the two musicians - the Nullarbor between Melbourne and Perth and the Portuguese word ‘boa’ which translates to ‘good’. Since Asha moved back to WA to be with her family, the pair have managed to maintain a strong musical relationship despite the distance. This album has been a long time coming, with COVID in the middle of it of course, and they are thrilled to be unleashing it.
BIO
Sugar Loaf is a new Australian duo devoted to the music of Brazil. Maximillian Rudd (seven-string guitar) and Asha Henfry (flute) are two of Australia’s most talented instrumentalists in the genre. The pair are united by a shared love of Brazilian choro - an instrumental style originating in nineteenth century Rio de Janeiro.
Sugar Loaf brings to life the textures and moods of Brazil’s musical golden age. Their intimate flute and guitar arrangements reflect both exuberant mastery and lyrical nuance. Having studied at prestigious Australian institutions, travelled extensively through Brazil, and learned directly from local masters, Maximillian and Asha offer an authentic interpretation of this rich tradition.
Their debut album, ‘Nulla-Boa’, is a raw and vivid display of their virtuosity, brimming with rhythmic fire, melodic warmth, and a heartfelt connection to the music’s roots. Wherever they perform, Sugar Loaf captivates audiences with their dynamic interplay and profound respect for the legacy of Brazilian music.
