MAX & ASHA - BREJEIRO

by ERNESTO NAZARÉ

Max & Asha is a new Australian duo devoted to the music of Brazil.
Maximillian Rudd (seven-string guitar) and Asha Henfry (flute) are two of Melbourne’s most promising instrumentalists who were united by a shared love of Brazilian choro, an instrumental music originating in nineteenth century Rio de Janeiro. Asha is a graduate of the prestigious Western Australian Academy of the Performing Arts (WAAPA), and Maximillian studied at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. Together they form this exuberant duo founded in a youthful musical approach.

Roda de Choro on Paquetá

This video, beautifully captured by my talented husband Geoff Baldwin sums up a perfect day on the island of Paqueta, Rio de Janeiro. In 2017 my husband and I travelled the world for 8months and a part of that was to spend 1 month in Rio playing as much choro as I possible could. I spent every day at the Casa do Choro and every night playing in the rodas de choro. It was one of the most incredible times of my life. At this roda I was honoured to play with Rui Alvim - clarinet, Luiz Flavio Alcofra - guitar, Jayme Vignoli - cavaquinho and Oscar Bolão - pandeiro.
